The vibrant green hills outside Dublin were a stark contrast to the cheerless suburb of Crumlin I had previously visited. I couldn't help but cue up Van Morrison's 'Astral Weeks' on the stereo, yearning to be born again on the soil that my distant family once called home. The drive north took us to Belfast, where we indulged in the best fish and chips of our lives, a reminder that simple pleasures can be profound. We then made our way to Portballentrae, where the ocean and the Giant's Causeway beckoned. It was here that I met Paddy, an old friend from my job, who offered me a tee time at Royal County Down. The course, with its massive and natural beauty, felt like a cathedral, and I was eager to play, even if I was struggling with my game. The Open Championship, with Rory McIlroy's presence, was a spectacle to behold, and I was grateful for the opportunity to witness it with my wife. The rain-soaked afternoon at Royal Portrush, with McIlroy's birdies and Scheffler's victory, brought me immense joy and a sense of peace. However, it was the unexpected detour to Bushfoot Golf Club that truly changed my perspective. Playing with two elderly gentlemen, Peter and John, I found laughter and a renewed love for the game. Their stories of retirement and the challenges they faced reminded me of the importance of cherishing the present moment and finding joy in the simple pleasures of life.
